“Stand-up Nurse” Honored as a Finalist in Companywide Award

5/07/2015

Josette ReadALDIE, Va. – She began her career as a management analyst; but after being emotionally impacted by the care that nurses provided her terminally-ill husband and her family, Josette Read, CRRN, discovered her calling to be a nurse. At age 48, she went back to school to become a registered nurse and began working with HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Virginia. Josette refers to her profession as a “stand-up nurse” who likes to makes her patients and colleagues laugh. Because of Josette’s unique approach to patient care and her positive attitude in the workplace, she has been honored as a recipient of HealthSouth’s companywide Outstanding Employee Achievement Awards.

Josette, one of only six finalists out of more than 24,000 HealthSouth employees, received this annual recognition and was honored at an award banquet held yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama. Award winners are selected based on their performance in four areas: contributions to extraordinary patient experience, team spirit and cooperation, commitment to continuous quality improvement and going above and beyond the call of duty. The process began with each of the 107 hospitals honoring a hospital employee of the year. Then, six finalists were named at the regional level; and one overall recipient was named for the company.

“Josette builds an honest and disarming rapport with patients and team members through her authenticity. Sincere effort and compassion are her hallmarks, which serve as exemplary behaviors,” said Jason Waibel, interim CEO and director of therapy operations at HealthSouth Northern Virginia. “Her buoyant spirit and humor are infectious, and she’s determined to keep the atmosphere appropriately light hearted and reminds us of the joy in our responsibilities. She is beloved by all.”

Josette’s responsibilities as a registered nurse in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital include caring for patients who are recovering from major illnesses and injuries such as stroke and other neurological disorders, cardiac and pulmonary conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, complex orthopedic conditions, and amputations.
